Ultra-Fast WiFi in the Offing

Intel and Motorola are developing rival standards for ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, allowing super-high-speed WiFi wireless data transfers with very low power requirements.

UWB is a short-range technology, meaning its most immediate applications will likely be in networks for homes and small offices, where DVD-quality video could be streamed to multiple devices. "Consumer electronics companies want UWB to replace cables and simplify set-up," says Jeff Ravencraft, technology strategist at Intel and chairman of the Wireless USB Promoter Group.

The first UWB devices are expected to ship later this year.
