Home in a Box

The SpaceBox apartment concept takes prefabricated housing to a new level. The Dutch company makes studio apartments that are self-contained in rugged, energy-efficient boxes that can be easily stacked into prefab apartment buildings. Each unit has a kitchen, shower and toilet, as well as a large window that lets in plenty of light.

SpaceBox plans to erect the units at universities throughout Europe to create, in effect, instant dorms. Additional intriguing applications include temporary housing for large-scale public events such as the Olympics, military housing, office space that needs to be constructed on short notice, and emergency shelter for disaster-stricken areas.
