Tired of "Thinking Outside the Box"?

Everyone likes to talk about "thinking outside the box," and some actually like to do it occassionally. In fact, the only thing people hate about "thinking outside the box" is the phrase "thinking outside the box." A term that describes an important and beneficial thought process has become one of the most worn-out cliches of our time.

To that end, innovation consultant Joyce Wycoff posted a whimsical exercise on her blog, asking her readers to propose and vote on replacement phrases. My personal favorite is "thinking past the horizon," though that one came in third. Just goes to show that it's just as difficult to think of a phrase to replace "thinking outside the box" as it is to actually think outside the box. Or should I say, think past the horizon.
